Follow the quick start below or check the answers for the most common capture and Audio Unit issues.
Requirements
- iOS or iPadOS 27 or later
- A compatible AUv3 effect or sampler with stereo audio input and output
- Permission to capture and use the source audio
Quick start
- Launch the destination app once after installing it so iOS can register its Audio Unit.
- In Patchbay, choose Live audio from other apps.
- Select an AUv3 destination and tap Open Controls.
- Prepare the destination to record its audio input.
- Tap Start recording, then approve Apple’s sharing prompt.
- Play audio in the source app and record it in the destination controls.
- Stop recording in the destination, return to Patchbay, and tap Stop recording.
- Choose Listen to destination to audition the result. Playback resumes automatically.
Patchbay hosts the destination’s Audio Unit extension. This hosted session is separate from the destination’s standalone app.
Why does iOS ask to share the entire screen?
Apple’s system interface authorizes capture at the display level. Patchbay cannot remove, skip, or automatically dismiss this prompt. Patchbay processes the captured audio only and does not save screen video.
Why is my Audio Unit missing?
Confirm that the destination provides an AUv3 effect with audio input and output. Open its standalone app once, restart Patchbay, and check the destination list again. Instrument-only Audio Units that do not accept audio cannot be used as recording destinations.
Why is there no incoming audio?
Confirm that capture is active, the source is playing, and the destination is listening to its input. Protected media and apps that block capture may provide silence. Try a source you own or have permission to record.
Capture will not start again. What should I do?
Stop capture using the iOS system capture indicator if it is still active, return to Patchbay, and try again. If the problem continues, force-quit Patchbay and include the exact error message in your support request.
What should I include in a support request?
Email [email protected] with your iPhone or iPad model, OS version, destination Audio Unit, the steps that led to the problem, and the complete error message shown. Do not include personal or sensitive information that is unrelated to the problem.
